One of the tips we wrote in our “Green Munich”guide was the second-hand markets, in German “Flohmarkt”. It is very practical to buy and sell used or pre-owned items at very low prices. It’s a good option to avoid carrying too much during your relocation process. In addition to the purchase options you find on the internet, the Flohmarkt is a good option with the advantage of meeting people.
It comes from the words “Floh” fleas and “Markt” market and is a very popular market type in Germany. They are focused on various topics such as children, bicycles, fashion, and so on. We have made a list of the most famous and traditional Flohmärkte in Munich:
Hofflohmarkt 2018
One of the “Flohmärkte” that have won a special place in Munich is the „Hofflohmärkte“. It was initiated by René Götz 15 years ago. The aim is, in addition to buying and selling, to make a space where neighbors talk and meet each other. Courtyards and garages of a neighbourhood’s houses are opened up and converted into Flohmarkt. It is organized in such a way that every weekend, from May to September, every neighborhood in the city has one day to do the Hofflohmarkt, with around 250 private patios and gardens participating. This is a good opportunity to make a city tour in every part of Munich and to get to know the vibes of every district or “Viertel”, districts in Munich have their own style and charme. Besides getting to know the city, meeting people and finding many interesting things to buy, you can’t miss trying some of the cakes that are sold there because they are homemade!!

Midnightbazar:
As the name says, it’s in the afternoon/evening and in addition to the experience of a Flohmarkt, there is a good atmosphere with live music, Streetfood and drinks. To see the next dates you can go to the Midnightbazar website. Entrance 3€, free for children.
Kinderflohmarkt:
Every spring-summer and autumn-winter season, many schools and kindergardens organize Kinderflohmärkte in a family atmosphere. Another option to find things for the children is the Kinderflohmarkt, we leave the link to see the next dates. Admission 3€, free entrance for children.
Fahrradflohmarkt:
You want a bike? In this Flohmarkt there are about 1745 bikes in very low prices and in different styles, Vintage Bikes, Citybikes, Tandems, for kids, and so on. Around 1000 bicycles where priced below 150 euros. This Flohmarkt is held once a year, usually in April. To be aware of the next date, you can check their website.
Riemflohmarkt:
An open air Flohmarkt on an area of 150,000 square metres, this Flohmarkt has also become a classic, one of the largest in Bavaria, where you can find everything you need. It is located in München Riem and starts from 6 am to 4 pm on Saturdays in July and August. You can see more dates on the Flohmarkt website.
My experience at the Flohmarkt

Well, in May I first participated in a “Flohmarkt” because I was curious and eager to see what it was, as well as what income I could have from something like this and I signed up (the Anmeldung) for a Flohmarkt of children’s and babies’ items, which organized a Kindergarten. I did the classification of the clothes that no longer fit the girl, I washed them, organized them and put a price on them. We arrived early that day, set the table, and the “little shop” was opened, it was really fun to see and talk with the people, both the ones who buy and the ones who are selling at the other stands. The price of things is negotiated, and I have to say I didn’t have a lot of clothes. At the Flohmarkt I sold several things and had fun….if I would do it again, the answer is yes but in order to have fun, have a good time and live with lots of people.
I share my finances with you:
Costs: 8€ per right to participate (table included).
2€ for the coffee and the cake I bought there.
1€ for the horse my little girl liked (obviously, if we’re there, I’d like something)
11 € total costs.
Revenue 12 € for sales.
That makes a profit of 1€. YEAAH!!! Hahahaha. But most of all, I had a lot of fun, ate some delicious cake and above all I connected with more people and felt more part of this city. That day I talked to more people about their experiences and there were those who have come to make profits of 200, 300 euros for a morning! It all depends on the number of visitors and the amount of merchandise you bring to sell.
